Set amidst the rolling Sussex Downs, Bartholomew Barn is a refurbished Grade II listed barn. A haven of tranquility with contemporary features, it’s the perfect setting for your romantic, countryside wedding. We invite you to celebrate your special day with us, enjoying all that the barn and its magical grounds have to offer.
The barn has been fully restored using authentic materials yet has a modern and tranquil atmosphere. This is a very versatile space, providing a light and airy setting for your wedding reception, and is able to cater for intimate groups or large parties.
In Spring, the woods behind the barn are carpeted with bluebells and the pretty courtyard gardens are full of colour year round and perfect for your wedding photographs.
From the scenic drive down the country lane to the entrance of Bartholomew Barn you will be totally captivated by this venue's idyllic setting. The warm, friendly personality of Frances, the venue owner, is always much appreciated at this relaxed rural wedding venue. If you are looking for flexibility then look no further.
The magnificent, Grade II listed oak-beamed barn was built in 1884.
Light fills the barn through its two double doors, boasting magnificent views over far-reaching farmland from one side and a charming courtyard scene from the other. Features include a handsome fireplace and Baltic pine wooden floor.
The barn is licensed for civil ceremonies throughout the year – with a roaring fire in the wood-burning stove during the winter, and sunlight and surrounding countryside in summer months. ‘Arrow’ slots, originally designed to let air in to the barn to dry the corn, house flickering tea-lights, while fairy lights wrapped around the oak beams add to the idyllic setting.
This can also be the venue for your wedding breakfast, seating up to 120 guests. Following your ceremony, we invite you and your guests to enjoy welcome drinks and canapés on the front lawn, in the courtyard, or in a marquee connected to the barn before sitting down to dinner.
Double doors lead from the barn in to a charming, flower-filled courtyard where you and your guests can relax over welcome drinks following your wedding ceremony.
The large fishpond is a memorable feature. Encircled by plants, it is beautiful by day and breathtaking as dusk falls and the area is illuminated. Informal seating and patio heaters make this a cosy space to spend the evening, with twinkling fairy lights in the trees above. In addition to the main barn, an open-sided barn runs the length of the courtyard. Adorned with flowers, this is the place to accommodate an outdoor bar and evening barbecue or hog roast.
The versatile courtyard can also seat over 150 guests for a civil ceremony, with optional large umbrellas overhead offering shade from the sun or from inclement weather.
The Plotting Shed
This pretty space incorporates a sitting area and bathroom and is completely separate from the barn and courtyard.
The Potting Shed is available to the wedding couple throughout the day, its facilities and long-length mirror make it an ideal area in which to get ready or simply to freshen up.
Our elegant front lawn is flat and spacious – the perfect spot for a marquee should you wish to have one. Alternatively, you might choose to enjoy the lawn for welcome drinks or your evening party. Guests of all ages will enjoy garden games, from treasure hunts and bouncy castles for children to croquet for the adults!
When it comes to photographs, the magical bluebell woods at the back of the venue are not to be missed! Take a moment away from your guests to enjoy a romantic stroll with your new spouse amongst the woodland.
Fields adjacent to the venue also offer ample parking for any guests wishing to drive to the venue, and cars can be left overnight before collection the following morning.
The Summer House
A new addition to Bartholomew Barn, the pretty, octagonal Summer House sits in the grounds and has many uses. Inside, stylish seating and colourful cushions make it a tranquil, private space for you to meet with the registrar before the ceremony takes place.
Throughout the duration of your wedding day, it can be used as a retreat, perhaps for mature guests to relax away from the evening celebrations, or for parents with young babies to enjoy a moment of calm. It might even be the perfect romantic getaway for you and your loved one to enjoy a quiet glass of Champagne away from your adoring guests.
